Western Cape police conducted a manhunt for two suspects who murdered a shop assistant during a near-George business robbery.

Two people entered a spaza shop near George on Friday evening in Touwsranten, Wilderness. Everyone wore masks on their faces.

"The suspects opened fire without warning according to information gathered at the crime scene. One of the bullets hit the 23-year-old shop assistant in the chest," said police spokesman Captain Malcolm Pojie.

Misheck Jemitalla, the store assistant, died.

The two gunmen then stolen their cellphones from two customers and took a large sum of money from the cash register before fleeing to thick bushes on foot.

"Forensic experts combed the scene for evidence and clues that can help book the attackers. We also seized three 9 mm bullets that were spent on the scene," Pojie said.

The attackers were identified as having a slim build and around 1.75 m tall in their late 20s.

Anyone with information was urged on 044 803 4764/14 or 072 942 0042 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111 to contact the investigating officer, Sergeant John Boezak.
