The French presidency said that two French soldiers with the anti-jihadist Barkhane force in Mali were killed on Saturday when their armored vehicle struck an improvised explosive device.

A third soldier had been injured in the explosion in the north-eastern Kidal province of Tessalit, a statement said.

President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute to the two dead soldiers, members of a paratroop regiment based in Tarbes, southwest France, while repeating his demand for the military junta, which seized power last month, to quickly turn into civilian rule.

Senior French politicians and military officers expressed concern about the impact that the military coup last month could have on the efficacy of the war against the jihadist in Mali and neighboring countries.

Swathes of Mali 's region is beyond central authorities' reach and years of fighting have failed to stop an Islamist uprising that has claimed thousands of lives since its emergence in 2012.

In West Africa France has deployed more than 5 000 troops serving in its anti-jihadist Barkhane campaign.

This latest incident, according to the French Army orders, brings the number of French soldiers who have died serving in the Sahel region since 2013 to 45.

In November 2019, France lost 13 soldiers in a single incident when two helicopters collided during an operation in Mali.
