Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) presidential candidate John Magufuli vowed to re-elect fast-track electrification of 2,600 villages still in the dark in Tanzania.

Within two years he said the remaining villages will be linked to the national grid.

Dr Magufuli made the remarks when on Tuesday, while on his way to Singida from the capital Dodoma, he addressed residents of Manyoni, accompanied by various party cadres of the CCM. The three zones are situated in central Tanzania.

"There's a lot to do here at Manyoni. If I'm elected president, I'll make sure all pending highways, water, and power projects are completed in the shortest possible time (residents) to access economic opportunities, "he said.

His government has now connected some 9, 570 villages to the grid in the past five years, according to President Magufuli, saying that when he took over the presidency, only 2,018 out of 12,228 total villages had access to electricity.

The statistics further show that the number of villages with electricity access increased from 2,018 in 2015 to 9,112 in April 2020.
