The World Health Organization (WHO) has said Africa will get at least 220 million initial doses once a Covid-19 vaccine is approved.

According to WHO Africa Program Area Manager Richard Mihigo, front-line healthcare workers and vulnerable groups will be given priority over the first batch.

He said distribution would be based on the individual country's population. Mr Mihigo said all 54 countries have expressed interest in a vaccine for Covid-19.

Africa has a population of over 1.3 billion. The global vaccine initiative, known as COVAX, aims to help buy and fairly distribute 2 billion doses of vaccines approved by the end of2021.

The initiative has nine vaccine candidates undergoing global testing. Two of the candidates for the vaccine are currently under test in Africa, according to Richard Hatchett, boss of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI).
