A body of a 36-year-old police officer was discovered in Port St Johns on Tuesday, a few days after a sergeant was shot and killed just outside Port Elizabeth over the weekend.

Constable Bathembu Mabhududu was murdered in Tombo A / A Gheto locality at around 06:00 in the morning, according to Eastern Cape police, while he was off duty.

"According to facts, last night [Monday] at approximately 22:00 he left his home to visit his wife in her rented room when unknown assailants shot and killed him," said police spokesman Brigadier Thembinkosi Kinana.

"He suffered numerous blows to his body," Kinana said.

Mabhududu 's murder comes shortly after another police officer in the Eastern Cape, the murder of Sergeant De Porres Leonard Frieslaar.

Frieslaar was found Saturday night in Bethelsdorp, just outside Port Elizabeth, with a gunshot wound to the head inside his Suzuki Celerio. His age was 37.

At this point the motive behind the murders is still unclear and no arrests have been made.

Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga said an attempt or assassination of a police officer was a challenge to institutional stability in the country and deprived their protector groups.

"No-one can take this lightly," Ntshinga said.

Anyone with details that could lead to an arrest has been urged on 082 300 2861 to call investigating officer Detective Captain Bongani Ngxola.
