Chairman of the South-South Governors' Forum and Governor of the Delta State, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, and former Vice-Presidential nominee of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) at the 2019 general election, Mr. Peter Obi, on Tuesday, congratulated the nominee of the PDP and Edo Governor of the State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, for excellent and purposeful leadership in the state, which they said had converted into a better life for Edo people.
Okowa and Obi, who joined the governor, his deputy and other members of the Edo PDP Campaign Council at the Governor's reelection campaign rally in Orhionmwon State Local Government District, expressed hope that the success of Obaseki and his affection for the citizens of Edo State would ensure the victory of the Governor in the September 19, 2020 election.
Addressing PDP supporters, Okowa said Obaseki had done too much for the people of Edo State in the last three years and nine months considering the state's weak financial status, noting: "I am quite confident that the state's financial status would be better following his results. Obaseki will be able to do more in the next four years.
"He is an educated man, and we in the Governors' Forum depend on his intelligence. Obaseki knows the economy and what is expected by the state and he is headed in that direction. He has created jobs, markets, and made people feel important; he has empowered the people to engage in state governance, thereby contributing to the state 's growth.
Okowa said he is optimistic that the governor will be re-elected, adding that "a lot of people will come out that day to cast and protect their votes to ensure continuity of progress in the Edo State.
On his part, Obi said: “Everybody is proud of Governor Godwin Obaseki because he is doing very well; he must come back to continue his good work for the people.
“He must come back to complete his work; he is doing Edo proud. I can tell you that beyond this state, everybody is proud of him.”
“Everybody is proud of your governor, that is why we are here campaigning for him; we don’t want people that make fake promises and after four years, they will come back to tell you that all they said were political promises.
“What he (Obaseki) is saying is real and he will do it; he has started the construction of Abudu bridge and will continue to deliver the dividends of democracy to his people,” he assured.
The former governor of the Anambra State also urged eligible voters across the state's 18 local government areas to come out massively on September 19, 2020 and vote for the PDP to allow the governor to consolidate his landmark accomplishments in all state sectors.
Meanwhile Obaseki said: "I thank Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, my brother and colleague from Delta State; we are both Bendelites. I would also like to thank my private-sector colleague, Mr Peter Obi, one of the very few who have flourished in industry and even in politics.
“People like Okowa and Obi are changing the face of politics in Nigeria and we in Edo have joined them to ensure development continues. We have come home to PDP and will remain in PDP.
“PDP is a party for all; it brings all people together, ensuring development. The party is a real democratic party where there is no godfather and no one man can dictate for the party. Edo is PDP and the party will banish godfatherism.”
“They say they will bring people with guns to scare us so that we can’t exercise our franchise; they can’t do that. I am the Chief Security Officer of the state and I will protect you.”
