Two people drowned on Monday, while one person was reported missing on Monday evening in a fishing boat mishap that happened in Ibeshe, Ikorodu region, Lagos Nigeria.

The incident had been confirmed at about 7 p.m. by the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA).

In a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN), LASWA General Manager, Mr Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, said that four people had been rescued alive in the mishap and that further inquiries revealed that the cause of the incident was the raw water current generally reported around the region.

"A Makoko Community fishing boat with seven(7) passengers on board, five ( 5) adults including the boat captain and two ( 2) kids, capsized into the Lagos lagoon while heading for Ikorodu's Offin area.

"Inquiries revealed that the fishing boat, clearly operating outside its fishing capacity and therefore not equipped with the necessary safety gadgets for passenger ferry operation, was carrying all related occupants and heading to Offin for the funeral of a relative.

"It was revealed at further investigations that all Seven(7) passengers on board did not wear a lifejacket. Four ( 4) passengers have been rescued alive with two ( 2) fatalities and one (1) missing passenger, "he said.

He added that LASEMA men and Marine Police were contacted to support the ongoing search for the remaining victim
