Local citizens' group led by former Lega party lawmaker Angela Maraventano organized a port rally aimed at stopping a group of refugees, recently rescued from disembarking by the Italian Coast and Financial Guards.

"Lampedusa will no longer be in such a situation. Either the Goprotest government takes urgent action or the whole island is going to strike. I can no longer manage the current emergency. The administration itself is going to call a strike and we are going to close it all," said Mayor Toto Martello.

Early on Sunday, Italian Coast and Financial Patrol vessels rescued about 450 refugees from Lampedusa who were in distress about four nautical miles offshore. The rescued people had been brought to the commercial port on the island.

In particular, a local reception center for refugees is originally built to accommodate 95 people but currently hosts about 1,500 refugees.

According to the Italian Ministry of the Interior's latest numbers, a total of 17,985 migrants arrived at the country by sea from 1 January to 28 August. The number amounted to 4,900 people in the same period in 2019.
