Four troops have been killed and 12 injured in an ambush in central Mali on Thursday, the army said, blaming the assault on jihadists who launched an uprising eight years ago.

The troops fell into a trap set by "terrorists" from an anti-poaching unit, the army said on social media. It was the second time since the military took over the nation on August 18 that the armed forces experienced a defeat on this scale.

The attack occurred between Konna and Douentza, close to Mopti city.

Four soldiers had been killed on Saturday when a bomb struck their car.

The incident also took place in central Mali, a volatile, ethnically diverse region badly affected by the jihadist uprising.

In the assault on Thursday, the army added that it also sustained significant losses of hardware.

It said it could not provide information of any enemy casualties.
