Kenya is the first country to be given the recommended Safer Tourism Seal status by Restoring Travel globally.

The Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife Najib Balala won the award in a virtual event attended by global tourism leaders under the umbrella of Restoring Travel, a global pro-tourism industry coalition consisting of tourism board members, tourism ministers, professional organizations , business stakeholders, researchers and scholars, as well as travelers.

CS Balala said the award testifies to the ongoing efforts Kenya has made to ensure the health of travelers following the global Covid-19 pandemic.

“As a destination, we have put together health and safety measures that are aimed at ensuring the safe reopening of the tourism sector. This is to ensure that our citizens, travelers, and workers are well protected. On behalf of my country I am happy to receive this recognition that shows we are headed in the right direction in regard to the Covid-19 safety protocols “said Balala.

As international travel resumes and hospitality outlets reopen, the Safer Travel Seal is crucial in building the confidence of travelers in the destination. The seal which is a worldwide recognizable symbol will be key to positioning Kenya as a safe and preferred destination.

Since then, the Destination Crisis and Issue Management Strategy has been launched, and a committee has gazetted long-term to oversee the crisis.

In order to receive this recognition, a destination must address key aspects known as tourism security by ensuring the safety , security, reputation of the destination, economic viability and health of the travellers.
