Since a rebel force ambushed and killed the bodyguards of vice-president James Wani Igga, a holdout oppositio group said, the South Sudan army has stationed thousands of its servants in the restive area of Central Equatoria.

Many civilians in Lobonok County, the area where last week's ambush took place, said government troops have been deploying in the area since Monday, and further government offensives are expected to set off rebels against the National Salvation Front (NAS) in the coming days.

"There's been a lot of unusual troop movements here in Lobonok Payam since yesterday (Monday)," one resident said on condition of anonymity.

The National Salvation Front (NAS) spokesman led by General Thomas Cirilo Swaka, Sube Samuel Manase, for his part, said in a statement that the military command in Bilpam has "directed all divisions in South Sudan to send troops to the GHQs in Juba.
