The creative and cultural division, has most times played an essential and seldom acknowledged role in innovation. There exist concrete evidence of firms in Cape Town “fused" to conglomerate creative inputs with digital technology to produce goods and services.

Despite South Africa's increasing awareness in CCIs contribution to the growth and job creation, innovation is still widely centered on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics sectors, otherwise known as STEM, with little to no research on the way. Digital technology has influenced innovation, most especially in the evident overlap between creative and digital division.

Cape Town was selected for this study due to its outstanding reputation as a city of creativity. This research was put in place to examine the relationship between intellectual property, digital tech, diversity, and innovation in the cultural and creative industry (CCI).

This research is part of the transnational collaboration between the University of Newcastle, UK Coventry, and South Africa Observatory. Findings show a collection of agile groups from highly innovative to small firms that combines digital skills with cultural skills to attain market demand.
