Gauteng Government Officials Set Up Tent Field Hospitals as COVID-19 Cases Surge

As Covid-19 cases skyrockets in Gauteng, South Africa, there has been an increase in hospital capacity, by the Department of Health leaving the Government to erect field hospitals in form of tents as the province expects an intense increase. 

 

Dr. Zweli Mkhizem the Minister of Health, on Friday, inspected the readiness and promptness of the tent site seeing to it that the site is fully equipped and properly managed. The tent site is erected adjacent to the Steve Biko Academic Hospital and the Tshwane District Hospital. 

 

Some of the areas, identified by the government and the city of Tshwane, where anticipated extra needs can be met is Kopanong, the Tshwane events center, and Dr. George Mukhari Hospital. These areas are of top priorities, due to the upsurge in COVID-19 cases. The emergency intervention team has taken the initiative to make a donation of over 1000 beds in the next three weeks. 

 

As the lockdown restriction has been eased, South Africa confirms accelerating Covid-19 infections. The country case rose from 13,734 to 238,339, in the space of two days. The current number of confirmed cases in Gauteng, South Africa stands at over 84,000.

 

“With the current happenings at Gauteng, it is not in any way surprising, but we must be vigilant, concerned, and attentive, we expect intense pressure on hospitals.”
