The federal republic of Somalia became one of the league of country’s that cannot in any way hold its elections; this is however not because of the current pandemic, but due to the preparatory challenges disclosed by the elections chief.

“NIEC has ruled out elections, scheduled on November 27th, 2020”, The National Independent Electoral Commission head, says in a statement. Further information revealed that the earliest an election could take place was on March 2021. In an address made to the parliament lower house, two options were presented:

  • A registration that is manually based, which can be held in March 2021.

  • An election based on registration through biometrics, which is as well possible in August 2021.

One of the biggest issues faced by the country Somalia is the issues of upcoming elections, with incumbent Mohammed Abdullahi Farmaajo seeking re-election. The last poll that took place was in February 2017, after months of unnecessary delays. After three consecutive rounds of voting, Sir Abdullahi emerged winner in a process smeared with vote-buying and corruption.
