The China-Africa Extraordinary Summit on Solidarity Against the COVID-19 was jointly proposed by China, Africa’s rotating chair of the African Union—South Africa, and Senegal, the co-chair of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered a keynote speech as he presided over the summit from Beijing with leaders of African countries, including members of the AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government as well as rotating chairs of major African sub-regional organisations, and the chairperson of the AU Commission all in attendance. Also in attendance as special guests were the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, and the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus.
