According to security sources, at least 69 people were killed on Tuesday afternoon in a small remote village in Borno State in North-Eastern Nigeria.

Shooters razed the Felo community in Gubia district shooting at residents who were fleeing and running them over with their vehicles.

The victims were said to have been caught off guard and surrounded while catering for their cattle at a watering hole outside the village.

The Gubio district is located 80 kilometers (50 miles) from the state's capital Maiduguri, which has been repeatedly targeted by armed groups.

Locals believe the attacks were a sign of retaliation for previous killings of the gunmen by the local vigilante group.

The vigilante group and local hunters were sent by authorities to protect the communities around the district from incessant attacks by terrorist groups, including Boko Haram defunct faction, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
However, no extremist group has yet claimed responsibility for this recent attack.
