Nigeria, India, and the Democratic Republic of Congo are three countries being put out by the World Bank as home to more than one-third of the world’s poor, with India bagging 24%, Nigeria 12%, and DR Congo 7% respectively.

According to the World Bank, the number of people living in abject poverty is likely to remain unchanged despite an expected rebound of the global economic growth next year—post-COVID-19. It further stated that Nigeria, India, and DR Congo currently stand with the highest ratios of the world’s poverty with a per-capita growth rate in real GDP of –0.8 percent, 2.1 percent, and 0.3 percent. The bank also projected that the world’s extremely poor is also not likely to grow ahead of their population, and likely to remain at its projected levels from 2020 through 2021.

The World Bank also stated that South Asia may likely witness a larger growth in the number of its poor due to the effect of COVID-19, as its two-thirds population which makes up the projected 176 million people expected to be pushed under the $3.20 per day poverty line are from India.
