The President of the Burundi National Assembly, Pascal Nyabenda, is next in line to be sworn in as the succeeding new president of Burundi ahead of the President-elect Evariste Ndayishimiye inauguration in August. This comes just after the federal government officially announced the demise of outgoing President Pierre Nkurunziza at age 55. 

 

Based on proclamations, former president Pierre Nkurunziza was hospitalized on Saturday following a brief illness. The president was however overseeing his 15-year rule ahead of consigning to Evariste Ndayishimiye, the president-elect. Unfortunately, he died after suffering a devastating cardiac arrest. The deceased had become a focus of COVID-19 virus speculations. It was further announced that the late Pierre was hospitalized due to the virus. 

 

Late last month, the First Lady of Burundi, Denise Nkurunziza was airlifted to Kenya for medical attention at Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi, she was however suspected of contracting the deadly virus. 

 

According to Health CAS Dr. Mercy Mwangangi, “I can attest that the country possesses one of the very best healthcare systems, the Ministry of Foreign affairs will deliver a statement with regards to her present health status, and whether or not such privileges will be awarded to other Kenyans”.

 

A statement is yet to be issued.
