The World Trade Organization (WTO) has accepted Nigeria’s former Finance Minister Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as one of the candidates likely to occupy the office of Director-General at the organization.  Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala who is a world-renowned economist twice served as Nigeria’s Finance Minister and currently sits on the Boards of Standard Chartered Bank, Twitter, Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization, as well as that of the African Risk Capacity.

Mr. Azevêdo’s decision to quit as Director-General of the WTO come towards the end of August 2020, a year before it expires has abruptly thrown open the position at an organization which already is in troubled waters following global trade tensions and a collapse in commerce due to the Corona Virus pandemic.

Nominations for the soon to be vacant position will close on 8 July 2020 according to the WTO. Okonjo-Iweala so far is vying for the position alongside other nominees which include Mr. Jesús Seade Kuri of Mexico and Mr. Abdel-Hamid Mamdouh of Egypt.
