RAPE: A CRIME OF OPPORTUNITY

The rate of sexual assault in Nigeria has become so alarming and seems to be an everyday occurrence.

Recently Mr. James Faleke a member of the federal house of representative recommended that any man who rapes a lady should be castrated; the house members rejected the motion. But if any man is castrated for raping a woman what will be done to a woman who sexually assaults a man or are we forgetting that men are also victims of this sexual harassment by some women? Also, we should not forget that many ladies make false rape allegations and if the law were to be balanced, there should be stiffer punishment for false rape allegations.

Rape is a criminal offense and if found guilty carries a life sentence, but why has this punishment not stopped this perilous act? In recent times, there have also been a lot of reports regarding minors and others especially women being raped in Nigeria.

According to statistics one in every four girls would have experienced one form of sexual assault or harassment before the age of 18. While some people suggest the death penalty for culprits, my heart is with those who have been sexually assaulted but cannot speak up due to the fear of being ridiculed or stigmatized in society.

Rape is a difficult but unavoidable war we must fight. While we keep praying for all the perpetrators of such an evil act to be brought to book, let us not stop the campaign against rape. It leaves a painful memory in the heart of the victim and people should stop blaming the victims for being raped. Rape is a crime, not a punishment.
