On Monday, May 25 2020, Mozambique recorded its first COVID-19 death. According to the country’s health ministry, the first fatality was a 13-year old child in Nampula, a northern province of the country.


According to the country’s National Director of Public Health, Rosa Marlene, the patient had an underlying health condition, which could have contributed to the child’s death. The country has so far recorded 209 cases, with 183 locally transmitted cases and 26 imported cases. Further investigations and contact tracing are also ongoing. South Africa remains the worst affected country in the southern African region and across the continent with about 20,000 cases followed by Egypt with over 17,000 cases.


The Africa Center for Disease Control (CDC) has recorded over 111,348 COVID-19 cases and over 3,348 deaths on the continent. According to the agency, the continent has registered 44,630 recoveries from the coronavirus.
