In Ivory Coast on Monday, thousands of children with face masks have now returned to schools. Ivory Coast was the first West African country to restart lessons and has now become the first country in Africa to begin schools after its two-month nationwide coronavirus shut down.

The reopening of school comes amid reports of dozens of daily infections, as the country now has a total of 2,423 confirmed cases and 30 deaths, indicating insufficient containment of the spread of the virus.

According to a ministry official, Assoumou Kbran, the Ivorian government decided to ensure that the children completed their education, as authorities have confidence that learning can restart under health and safety guidelines.

A few hygiene measures put in place included the creation of handwashing areas in schools with the supervision of teachers and the provision of hand sanitizers for pupils.

From Monday hundreds of teachers and students will be ferried back to boarding school out of the disease’s epicenter and country’s capital Abidjan. This raises fears that the infection may become widespread.
