The prime minister of Lesotho, Thomas Thabane has officially resigned over his possible involvement in the assassination of ex-wife, late Lipolelo Thabane, 58, in 2017.
This comes after heavy criticism of the embattled PM from citizens and his party the All Basoto Convention (ABC), over allegations of his involvement in the murder of his ex-wife- who he was in the process of divorcing, days before his inauguration in 2017. His current wife, Measaiah Thanbane, 43, who he married two months after Lipolelo’s death is been arraigned as a co-conspirator.
Last month, under the orders of Thabane the army took to the streets in the country’s capital, Maseru, to, according to him “restore order” while also accusing unnamed enforcement agencies and political rivals of undermining democracy.
His party’s coalition government had previously set up a dignified exit for him under South African mediation, but he refused to set the least departure date from his appointment.
He said in his televised speech that he no longer can finish the work he was elected to do, and has withdrawn from his duties and public life.
Lesotho’s current finance minister, Moeketsi Majoro, will replace 80-year old Thabane.
