President Muhammadu Buhari has been advised by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) to put an end to the purchase of luxury official cars for politicians from now on till the end of his tenure in office.

The body in an open letter addressed to the President urged him to use his leadership position to borrow a leaf from the Namibia example and swiftly call in an Executive order to place a ban on the purchase of new cars by the Presidency and all Ministers for the remainder of his tenure as President which officially elapses in May 2023. According to reports, Namibia’s President Hage Geingob last week imposed a five-year ban on the purchase of new cars for top politicians and government officials in the country, a move that could save the country about $10.7 million.

SERAP went further to ask President Buhari to also compel the Nigerian legislators and governors to desist from purchasing any new vehicles and use what ever savings within their coffers to pay salaries and entitlements to workers and retirees. It also stated that putting a lid on profligacy by the Presidency, National Assembly and among State Governors in trying times like what the country is currently faced with will serve public interest, as well as cut down the heavy cost of governance.
