52 SENEGALESE VILLAGES TO BE ELECTRIFIED SOON

Senegal aims to provide access to electricity to all its citizens by 2025. An issue that is mainly played out in rural areas where 54% of villages already had access to electricity in 2019. 52 villages of Kaffrine and Nioro will soon join the ranks of electrified localities.

 

In Senegal, 52 villages in the departments of Kaffrine and Nioro will be connected to the electricity grid as part of an inter-municipal project. This announcement was made by Adama Diouf the president of the Kaffrine County Council.

 

“We have a large inter-municipal project led by the departmental council of Kaffrine and that of Nioro. It is about the electrification of 52 border villages ” , affirmed the person in charge during the arbitration of the 2021 budget.

 

This rural electrification project will benefit from support from the Emergency Program for the Modernization of Frontier Axes and Territories (PUMA) but also from external partners.

 

Inter-municipal projects allow local authorities to pool their resources, in particular for better financing of initiatives. The government has also set up a financial envelope of $ 3 million to encourage municipalities to use this type of collaboration.

 

The implementation of this project is part of the national ambition to achieve universal access to energy by 2025. The government has also announced a $ 1 billion investment in rural electrification. by 2023.
